Heads up — this is a long & info-rich article. I’d recommend reading it in the Substack app or via your browser so it doesn’t get cut off. <3
From March 1 - April 12, the planet of love and loving will retrace her steps over familiar territory, cycling back from Aries to Pisces to reanimate the past and remind us who we are, together and apart.
Venus retrogrades are often described as breakup transits (and that can be true) but they’re even more notorious for bringing lovers and connections back around via dreams, thoughts, synchronicities, and (sometimes) actual contact. During retrogrades, we’re reflecting and revisiting, which sometimes means we end up rehashing old dynamics too. Though tricky and sticky, these periods offer us perspective, and the opportunity to learn, integrate, and grow through relationships of all kinds — human, spirit, animal & more.
Below, I’ll detail the big themes I see emerging this Venus retrograde. Then I’ll help you ID the personal themes that are most active for you, so you can rewind with a bit more intention — and maybe untangle some old knots in the process.
Venus Retrograde: The Fundamentals
The planet Venus is traditionally connected to what we love, value, and find beautiful. In natal astrology, we look to Venus to understand who and what we’re attracted to, how we express affection, and what we need to feel fulfilled in connections of all kinds. Ruler of both Taurus and Libra, Venus connects us to the sensual creature pleasures that make life delicious and full (Taurus) and the relational mirrors that helps us come to know ourselves through the other (Libra).
Every 18 months or so, Venus stations retrograde, and we begin a roughly 40-day exploration of these themes. Some astrologers call it an underworld journey, because these stretches can be confronting. We’re challenged to re-evaluate our relationship to love, beauty, pleasure, sensuality, and connection. And that often means we come face-to-face with old patterns, beliefs, and people.
Convening with ghosts of the past is a tricky business, especially if we’ve been dishonest with ourselves about what we really want and need. But Venus retrogrades can be fruitful and generative too, drawing us toward our raw, honest hearts and asking for sincerity. Retrogrades push us to get real — to peel back the layers of illusion and denial and get to the core of what our souls crave. These deep-dives ultimately help us examine the webs of connection we’re weaving and ask ourselves if they’re truly aligned with our values and desires.
Venus Retrograde in Aries & Pisces
This year, Venus will retrograde through the signs of Aries and Pisces — the domains of Mars and Jupiter. That means our retrograde themes will be largely colored by these two signs, and wherever they show up in our natal charts (more on that later). Cardinal fire (Aries) and mutable water (Pisces) are quite different in nature, need, and desire. And I expect a good deal of this retrograde will about honoring our seemingly paradoxical parts too.
Venus in Aries wants to feel alive
They crave and pursue the objects of their affection — chasing the quick surge of adrenaline, the rush of blood, the hot fever of desire. Bold, audacious, vibrant, and charged, this Martial Venus is built for speed. It can make us impulsive and courageous, passionate and wild. We burst through our fears with the ferocity of a child gripped by excitement. We seek adventure, and maybe a little danger. The spicier the better. Heat and friction thrive here, turning the volume up on our desires and blending affection with confrontation. We may want or need to fight or compete for it.
Venus is traditionally considered to be in detriment in Aries, which adds a texture of challenge. The question becomes, “How do I go after what I want?”
Venus in Pisces wants to feel bliss
They ache for other-worldly connection, awesome beauty, and soft surrender. Oceanic and ethereal, this Jupiterian Venus drops you into the depths of experience, where you embrace the song, the dance, the lover, the paint, the mist until you become it and it becomes you. Equal parts hallucinogenic and spiritual (shoutout to Neptune), Venus in Pisces beckons us into the sea, and we’re changed by it. We let go. We allow. We release. And we flow. This is the place of both buoyant hope and total despair. It’s in the Piscean seas that we see all that could be and all that could have been.
Venus is traditionally considered to be exalted in Pisces, which fosters flow and (often) overwhelm. The question becomes, “How do I let go without losing myself?”
2025 Venus Retrograde Timeline
This year’s retrograde begins in Aries on March 1 and ends in Pisces on April 12. But the full retrograde story is longer and richer. It also happens to overlap with Mercury retrograde AND eclipse season, both of which are covering nearly the same exact terrain in Aries and Pisces. On top of that, we’ve just emerged from Mars retrograde. And Neptune enters Aries for the first time on March 30.
In short, this one’s a doozy. There’s an incredible amount of change, friction, and disruption occurring, personally, relationally, and collectively. At an individual level, we’ll notice this most in our mutable (Pisces, Virgo, Gemini, Sagittarius) houses and cardinal (Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn) houses.
Below, I’ll cover the major chapters of this Venus retrograde, including milestone transits to pay extra attention to along the way and reflection questions to guide you toward deeper insights.
Pre-Retrograde Shadow (Jan 28 - Mar 1)
A time to take note of emerging themes and messages
Core Themes
Venus has been teasing at us since January 28, when she crossed 24° Pisces, entering the pre-retrograde shadow period — a phase that hints at the larger themes of the retrograde itself. You’ve probably noticed budding disruptions in the late Pisces and early Aries parts of your chart since then, and especially the relationships those houses correspond to.
During the pre-shadow, we’re walking the same terrain we’ll soon retrace. That means whatever happens now is up for review and reimagining during the six weeks Venus revisits these same degrees.
Major Transits
On February 1, the Moon, Venus, Neptune, and North Node met up at 27°-28° Pisces, coaxing us into dreaminess, yearning, and nostalgia. It likely blew through some boundaries too, leaving you depleted, tired, or disillusioned.
What was emerging and fluctuating then, especially in your Pisces house?
On February 8, Venus formed a sextile to Pluto in Aquarius, a transit that will recur on March 21 and May 6. This moment sparked intimacy, desire, and a bit of shadow play. Venus-Pluto can feel provocative and tempting.
What desires did you noticing bubbling up then, especially in your Aries house?
Craving some extra Piscean prep material for this retrograde? I wrote a rich piece about that February 1 mashup and the Venus in Pisces shadow here:
Recommendations
If you’re reading this before March 1, consider what you can do to energetically prepare for the retrograde + eclipse season ahead. I’d recommend setting a simple intention for grace and resilience. We’ll all need both as we head into stormy weather. It’s worthwhile to ask yourself what physical + spiritual habits feel most sustainable too. How can you lean on those during the ups and down to come? And how can you show up for folks around you who might need energetic and practical support too?
Venus Retrograde in Aries (Mar 1 - Mar 27)
A time to be in your body and to listen to what it’s telling you
Core Themes
During the first leg of our retrograde, Venus rewinds from 10°50 to 0°00 Aries, placing our focus on the first decan of cardinal fire, which belongs to Mars — the malefic ruler of Aries and Scorpio, and the planet associated with fighting and f*cking. It’s visceral and physical.
With Venus retrograde in Aries, we’re exploring what it means to want something and to go for it. Sometimes our desires lead us toward genuine, life-giving pleasure. And sometimes they steer us away from what’s good for us, into ravenous, individualistic consumption. For one month, we’ll practice sitting with what we want and asking ourselves if it’s worth fighting for it.
Major Transits
On March 1, Venus stations retrograde at 10°50 Aries, stopping our forward movement and stalling out our impulses for a moment. It might feel like lurching forward then being pushed back. It’s time to sit and watch before we move.
Where are you feeling restriction, urgency, or impatience?
On March 1, Venus forms a conjunction with the Moon in Aries, just a few hours after stationing retrograde. This initiatory conjunction sparks a need, a desire, an emotion that we feel inclined to chase. Immediately, we want something.
What unmet desires are you noticing?
On March 11, Venus forms a conjunction with Mercury in Aries, nudging us to think about — and maybe articulate — the urges brewing beneath the surface. It’s a day to explore old narratives around desire, sexuality, passion, and rage.
What desires are you ready to speak aloud, if only to yourself?
On March 14, we experience a South Node lunar eclipse in Virgo. While Venus is out of orb of the luminaries, the Sun is at 23°56 Pisces — less than 1° from where she’ll station direct on April 12. It’s a punctuation mark in the midst of it all.
What are you ready to exhale, especially in your Virgo house?
On March 15, Mercury stations retrograde at 9°35 Aries. Yes, that’s also just 1° from where Venus stationed retrograde, emphasizing the combined themes of Mercurial (mental) and Venusian (relational) reflection.
What limiting stories about self & other are you ready to untangle from?
On March 21, Venus forms a sextile to Pluto in Aquarius, inviting intimacy and honesty. It’s a moment of potent change — if we seize it. Something is revealed. Or maybe we’re revealing it. It might be subtle. But it’s worth listening to.
What desires are you ready to reveal to another?
On March 22, Venus forms a conjunction with the Sun in Aries, illuminating the energetic invitations of this retrograde. This may be a moment for bravery, when you’re called to buck old rules and roles and rewrite the script.
What does it feel like to embody your desires?
Recommendations
I’d expect peak energy around these dates. Cravings are likely to be stronger, as are impulses. I’d suggest attuning to your physical needs and desires more than usual, and doing what you can to move energy through the body — sweat, sesh, etc.
Venus Retrograde in Pisces (Mar 27 - Apr 30)
A time to loosen our grip and accept impermanence
Core Themes
During the second leg of our retrograde, Venus rewinds from 30°00 to 24°37 Pisces, placing our focus on the third decan of mutable water, which also belongs to Mars. Fighting and f*cking, you get it. But this time, in water. It’s emotional and spiritual.
With Venus retrograde in Pisces, we’re exploring our unquenchable thirst for bliss and transcendence. We might face grief over the realization that we simply cannot manifest the most magical jaw-dropping outcome. Or, we might feel real, deep, moving, awe-worthy bliss, and then be challenged to accept its brevity. Finding creative ways to embrace and let go, to merge and release is the way forward.
Major Transits
On March 27, Venus forms a conjunction with Neptune in Pisces, just hours after re-entering Pisces. We’re immediately initiated into its illusory magic. Presence beckons. Explore the tension of boundaries and the calls to connect.
How can you embrace magic, romance, and possibility without attachment?
On March 28, Venus forms a conjunction with the Moon in Pisces, inviting us into our second lunar deep-dive. Sensitivity abounds. We’re swimming in existential soup. It could feel wildly creative and surreal, or desperately bleak. Maybe all of the above.
How can you honor your sensitivities without getting lost in the sauce?
On March 29, we experience a North Node solar eclipse in Aries, less than 2° from where Venus stationed retrograde on March 1. Like our March 14 Virgo eclipse, this lunation is emphasizing the retrograde degrees. This time, the beginning.
What growth is rising up to greet you in your Aries house?
On April 1, Venus forms a conjunction with the North Node in Pisces, beckoning us toward authentic, soul-quenching spiritual connection. It could feel like both a shedding and an opening. Possibly uncomfortable, probably necessary.
What kind of connection is your spirit craving?
On April 6, Venus forms a trine with Mars in Cancer, touching base to trade notes from simpatico water realms, exploring the delicious desires and gentle care that help us feel whole. This is a day to act on what the North Node showed you.
What do you need to feel connected and at ease?
On April 7, Mercury stations direct, and Venus forms a conjunction with Saturn in Pisces and a sextile with Uranus in Taurus, challenging us to firm up our boundaries, choose a new way of relating, and put some oomph behind our dreams.
What vision are you ready to (re)commit to?
On April 12, Venus stations direct at 24°37 Pisces, pausing our focus and attention on all that we’ve explored, and adding a bit of imagined urgency to the moment. Desires might surge. We might ache for more. There’s always time to explore.
What spiritual & emotional needs are making themselves known?
Recommendations
These dates bring messages. I’d pay attention. They might come through music, art, or the passing whispers of strangers. They might come through dreams. Whatever the source, stay open to the synchronicity and potential of the moment.
Post-Retrograde Shadow (Apr 12 - May 16)
A time for integrating the lessons we learned this retrograde
Core Themes
As Venus charts her path forward post-retrograde, she’ll re-encounter some of the same players she met during the retrograde. And the breadcrumbs we collected might begin to take clearer shape. Covering the same ground, from 24°37 Pisces to 10°50 Aries, we’ll move through Martial territory again armed with new insight, and probably new bruises.
Post-retrograde shadows can sometimes feel heavy and dense, as we wade through what’s happened and take stock of all that’s changed. But they’re the opportune moment to put new awareness into action — to take baby steps forward, slowly, intentionally, and differently than before.
Major Transits
On April 24, Venus forms a conjunction to the Moon and Saturn in Pisces, reminding us of our March 28 and April 12 conjunctions. Something is firming up post-retrograde. There’s a renewed commitment to our needs.
On April 25, Venus forms a conjunction to the the North Node, drawing us back to their last meeting on April 1. What’s now crystallizing around our relationships, pleasure, style, values & more?
On April 30, Venus re-enters Aries. We return to fire.
On May 2, Venus forms a conjunction to Neptune, now in Aries, and we experience the dawn of a new Venus-Neptune era. This is a major moment collectively. Neptune just entered Aries on March 30.
On May 6, Venus forms a sextile to Pluto, harkening back to the vulnerability we flexed around March 21.
On May 16, Venus clears 10° Aries, ending the post-retrograde shadow period.
Recommendations
Be gentle with yourself. You’re probably tired from a retrograde/eclipse season that accelerated life to the nth degree. Maybe you’ve navigated high conflict or made sweeping changes in life and love. Give yourself the grace to stumble as you collect yourself. Seek support with folks who get it.

How to Make Meaning from the Mess
Now… what does this all mean for you at a more personal, relational level?
There are countless ways to draw individual meaning from Venus retrogrades. I’ll outline some of the basic approaches below. But I’d encourage you to not over-analyze, and instead practice staying present with your lived experience. I know, I know. I’m saying that as I publish a massive article that encourages intellectualization. But, like, it’s your life. Choose how you want to engage. ;)
1. Examine prior Venus retrogrades.
During retrogrades, the past informs the present more than ever. And since Venus retrogrades recur in the same signs every eight years, exploring themes from prior cycles can illuminate what we’re learning and expanding on now. Each 8-year cycle tends to build on itself, meaning we’re often reflecting on similar material… and similar people.
This year, Venus is reviving themes from Spring 2009 and Spring 2017, when she last retrograded through the signs of Aries and Pisces:
March 6 - April 17, 2009 – 29°11 Pisces - 15°27 Aries
March 4 - April 15, 2017 – 26°54 Pisces - 13°08 Aries
March 1 - April 12, 2025 – 24°37 Pisces - 10°50 Aries
That means people, places, and experiences from 2009 and 2017 are likely to resurface for you this retrograde.
2. Study the houses Venus will retrograde through.
Looking to your late Pisces (~24°-30°) and early Aries (~0°-15°) houses/placements can help you unearth the meaning of this moment too. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but here’s a list of house themes to get your wheels turning. I’ve included relevant rising signs beside each house for ease.
1st House (Aries & Pisces rising) – self, body, health, style
2nd House (Aquarius & Pisces rising) – finances, possessions, resources, values
3rd House (Capricorn & Aquarius rising) – siblings, peers, neighbors, covens
4th House (Sagittarius & Capricorn rising – family, ancestors, roommates, home
5th House (Scorpio & Sagittarius rising) – children, dates, romance, pleasure
6th House (Libra & Scorpio rising) – pets, employees, health, jobs
7th House (Virgo & Libra rising) – partners, clients, enemies, contracts
8th House (Leo & Virgo rising) – beneficiaries, shared assets, debtors, dead
9th House (Cancer & Leo rising) – teachers, travelers, journeys, philosophy
10th House (Gemini & Cancer rising) – bosses, colleagues, career, reputation
11th House (Taurus & Gemini rising) – communities, peers, comrades, dreams
12th House (Aries & Taurus rising) – spirits, dreams, subconscious, endings
Consider how these themes and relationships showed up during the 2009 & 2017 cycles, and how they’ve been showing up since Venus entered her pre-retrograde shadow on January 28. The focus themes will likely shift around the ingresses, when Venus changes signs. Comment if you’d like to share what you’re noticing. :)
3. Consider aspects, rulership & more.
For folks with beyond-basic astro skills, here are some of the additional chart factors to consider that will add extra nuance and texture.
Any planets or angles Venus will form major aspects to — That includes placements that fall in the following ranges (I’m using a 3° orb, but you could increase to 6° or whatever you prefer):
Conjunction – 21°-30° Pisces; 0°-13° Aries
Opposition – 21°-30° Virgo; 0°-13° Libra
Square – 21°-30° Gemini & Sagittarius; 0°-13° Cancer & Capricorn
Trine – 21°-30° Cancer & Scorpio; 0°-13° Leo & Sagittarius
Sextile – 21°-30° Capricorn & Taurus; 0°-13° Aquarius & Gemini
The houses, angles, planets, nodes & bodies Venus rules — Look to your Taurus and Libra stuff.
Your natal Venus — Natal Venusian themes tend to come up, whether or not our natal Venus is aspected/directly involved in the retrograde.
Your Solar Return Venus & Venus-ruled houses/placements — Consider what’s being activated in your SR chart this year, and who’s answering to Venus.
Remember: Placements that were activated by transit in 2009 and 2017 will likely be impacted again, since the retrograde range only shifts by a few degrees every 8 years. That means the same natal placements are up for review.
A Personal Example
As a Taurus rising, this retrograde is occurring in my 11th house (Pisces) and 12th house (Aries). My natal Venus at 28° Pisces will be directly involved in this retrograde, and it’s the ruler of my Ascendant, Sun, Mercury, 1st House, and 6th House. It forms a sextile to my Ascendant and my 9H Saturn in Capricorn, and a trine to my Descendant.
In short: This Venus retrograde is extremely personal for me, as are most Venus retrogrades, as a very Venusian person. But this one especially. The personal impact (1H) will likely ripple out to affect other people and other realms of life too, including my dog (6H), my health (6H), my partners (7H), my spiritual practice (9H), my communities (11H), my dreamworld (12H), my subconscious (12H), and more.
What’s more, Venus retrograde in Aries will square my natal Jupiter-Uranus opposition, which falls in my 2nd and 8th houses. It’ll also sextile/trine my MC-IC axis. That means this retrograde is also likely to impact my finances (2H/8H), work and reputation (MC), and family relationships (IC) in some form — potentially disruptively, possibly generatively. We’ll see! Since Jupiter rules all my Pisces placements, along with my 11th and 8th houses, it’s possible I’ll see some action there too.
I can gauge all of that based on the aspects transit Venus will form to my natal placements, and what those natal placements are in charge of in my chart. That hints at the trickle-down effect of transit Venus.
Reflecting back on our prior retrograde dates, where the same planets and angles were activated, I can see clear through lines that are resurfacing in my life now too.
Spring 2009
I was ending my freshman year of college. I’d been forging new connections and attempting to find my people. I made some special connections, but I remember feeling alone in the crowd that spring — surrounded by people but still pretty anxious and alienated. I was also dreaming of an ex who’d broken my heart in high school. I ended up reconnecting with them that summer and we rekindled our romance (bad idea!!!).
Spring 2017
I was branching out and building new connections in San Francisco, including a good deal of professional networking. I was feeling more satisfied with my friendships, but a bit disenchanted with the culture of the city and my work, which felt draining and misaligned. I was also casually dating a few people who didn’t know about each other yet. These were flings and foreign love affairs that never materialized into long-term committed relationships, but were nonetheless deeply meaningful and formative to me. All of them would linger on in my heart and mind for years after that spring, each for very different reasons.
Spring 2025
The tale has yet to be told. But some recurring themes are already obvious: feelings of loneliness and social isolation; branching out to cultivate new connections, both online and offline, and particularly those rooted in shared values and politics; harboring a crush. I’ve also, like clockwork, begun thinking about those three 2017 lovers again, and I’ve even reconnected with one of them (see: aforementioned crush). I expect digging into those past stories will unearth a good deal of my Venus retrograde story.
Retrograde Reflections
When Venus retrogrades jostle up old crushes, anxieties, and desires, they’re offering us a window into the past and present, illuminating the parts of us that yearn for recognition.
Sometimes the sparks are fleeting — like revisiting a polaroid from the past to savor the flavor of an old love, or hearing an influx of nostalgic songs that take you back to a particular moment in time, full of ripe memory.
But sometimes it runs deeper — like return visitors who come back (literally or energetically) to remind us of who we once were and how we once loved. They might jog our memory so we can make peace with the past. They might even help us repair something that broke or bewildered us. Or (and I say this with emphasis) they might just remind us why we moved on in the first place.
In any case, heeding the reflective invitations of these periods can help you emerge with medicine you didn’t even know you needed. So can rooting in the personal impact of the transit, based on your own natal chart.

Collective Invitations
Beyond the personal level, I’d recommend working with this retrograde by asking yourself how you can show up in service to your communities, and the humans, creatures, and spirits that tend to our shared Earth
How can you cultivate deep hope in this moment by feeding the collective well with inspiration, creativity, and compassion?
That’s ultimately the Venus in Pisces call — generating hope that makes way for healing and oneness. Not flimsy New Agey oneness. Not live laugh love oneness. I mean raw, real, potent, animistic oneness that drives us to protect our Earth home and all its beings. In Pisces, we build the kind of hope and resilience that comes only after we’ve walked through Saturnian straits and returned to Jupiter’s lands. We’ve seen pain, we’ve grieved loss, and we choose to return to hope anyway.
How can you expand your spiritual practices to serve acute collective needs in this moment?
We need heart-centered action more than ever — the kind that doesn’t wait for perfect, but recognizes that something is better than nothing. The kind that doesn’t simmer in despair, but takes inspired action, whether it’s devoting a prayer to the wellbeing of all, stocking your community fridge, or volunteering with your local mutual aid group. Maybe all of the above! I talked about this at length in my latest podcast episode, and this call feels deeply relevant to Venus in Aries. The time is now.
When you feel compelled to retreat or disappear, how can you move toward connection instead?
Finally, remember to prioritize your wellbeing first and foremost. Filling your cup through pleasure, connection, and community is essential to the long game. When we stay well, we show up well. We show up whole. Prioritizing your Venusian needs throughout this Venus retrograde, and even daring to ask for support when you need it, is one of the most medicinal acts of all.

Holy cow, you've packed a lot in here! Wowza. Thank you for all the effort you put into this. And I love that in your three Collective Intentions at the bottom, you've touched on some of the same themes I just brought up in slightly different words in my note for tonight's horoscopes. (I shouldn't be surprised, given the astrology involved, but it's still fun to notice.)
Wow, what a wildly generous and substantive post! As another Venusian deeply and directly impacted by this retrograde/eclipse season, this is truly such a balm and I’ll be returning to it all spring 🌷 Thank you so much!
